Quilts and American Culture
Do you associate quilts, particularly patchwork quilts, with American culture? We have chosen a particular American pattern for our friendship quilt, the monkey wrench pattern. What are your feelings about having your Asian textiles incorporated into an American cultural form?

Quilts are very engrained in American culture and bring back fond memories of sitting with my grandmother sewing patches together for newborns in the family. Bringing this idea to Asian studies is a wonderful way of showing the various pieces of culture represented at ECU. There is so much diversity and the quilt shows very interesting pieces of peoples lives and artwork in one place. I'm looking forward to seeing the quilt grow with the ECU family.
American quilts with their exquisite patterns and unusual color combinations have always fascinated me. Textile designing interests me from the point of view of an artist and an art historian. I love textiles of different places. Hence, adding more and more textiles samples to our quilt for the Asian Studies website seems like a very worthwhile project.
